Africa’s great wildlife stage
Tanzania is home to some of the most famous wildlife areas on Earth. The Serengeti’s endless plains, the Ngorongoro Crater and the baobab country of Tarangire form the classic Northern Circuit.
Most trips start in Arusha, close to Kilimanjaro International Airport, or by road from Nairobi. Travel privately, join a shared group departure, or combine Tanzania with a Kenya safari.

Tanzania through the year.

- January to March: calving season on the southern Serengeti plains.
- April and May: the long rains, with lush scenery and very few visitors.
Before you travel
Practical notes.
- Entry: check Tanzania’s current visa rules, and carry a yellow fever certificate if required.
- Money: US dollars are widely used for tips and extras. Bring newer notes.
- Packing: layers for chilly crater mornings, a dust scarf and a sun hat.
